Abstract:

This essay explores the enduring fascination with fairies in global cultures and media, focusing on their representation in manga artist Kore Yamazaki's "The Ancient Magus’ Bride" and William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night’s Dream." While both works feature enchanting fairy realms, the essay delves into the adaptation and reinterpretation of traditional British myths and characters, specifically the Irish Gaelic Aos Sí. Yamazaki's international recognition with the anime adaptation of her work sets the stage for a comparative analysis of Shakespeare's classic play. The narrative arcs of Chise in "The Ancient Magus’ Bride" and the romantic entanglements in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" provide a framework for examining the portrayal of fairies and their adherence to or departure from cultural mythology. The essay aims to unravel the intricate threads of fairy folklore woven into these narratives, evaluating how cultural elements and character depictions are altered or preserved in the imaginative realms crafted by Yamazaki and Shakespeare.
